Aggression is any behavior, including verbal events, which involves attacking another person, animal, or object with the intent of harming the target. According to social psychology, any behavior or act aimed at harming a person or animal or damaging physical property.

A few examples of aggressive acts : acts of physical violence, shouting , swearing and harsh language.

Humans and other animals use violent, even deadly aggression instinctively to obtain food, protect their young or defend themselves against bodily injury.

What causes Aggression ?


It may be caused due to the different reasons . According to psychology, some people become more aggressive than others due to following reasons :

Heavy stress : 

Due to heavy stress or anxiety , a another personality of such person rises , that is so rude because the person who faced so much problems and always in stress, aggression level of such person goes rises and such person become more violent than others (aggressive) . Heavy stress is the main factor of having a person more aggressive.

Genetics :

Aggressive behavior can also be passed down genetically, children are at a greater risk of adapting aggressive tendencies if they have a biological background for it. When the father is aggressive ,then it is possible that the son become aggressive without any psychological fact because of his genetics transferred down to him through his father . Time and time again, father and son both display same aggressive behavior.

Psychological frustration :

It’s human nature to become frustrated when life just doesn’t seem to be going well. This frustration may involve work, live , future , past, etc. and can lead to an feeling of negativity all around. This feeling then represents a threat, which can lead to aggression. It is also a most common factor that is responsible for aggression in human beings and nowadays, it spread aggression in the teens or young age persons due to studies, jobs , family , carrier , love-life, etc.

Hormonal imbalance :

A hormonal imbalance in an individual can certainly contribute aggressive behavior i.e. high level of testosterone contributes in high level of aggression . That’s why males characteristically more aggressive than females because of the testosterone level of males is higher than females , but in some rare cases, females also get their testosterone level higher.

social factors :

How you were raised may play a role in whether or not you engage in aggressive behavior . People who grow up witnessing aggression may be more likely to believe that violence and hostility are socially acceptable and some other social reasons like watching more action movies and playing such types of games that makes other person aggressive or spread aggressiveness between the children are such a reason and factor that cause aggression in human beings.

Medical conditions :

Aggressive behavior could happen as a result of certain health condition that damage your brain, including strokes, dementia , head injuries etc. Medications that cause changes in the brain can sometimes lead to aggressive behavior.

Types of Aggression


Psychology divides it into two main types, that are following :

  • Impulsive :  It is characterized by strong emotions. This form of aggression is not planned and often take place in the heat of the moment.

For example : If somebody comes in front of your car when you are driving fast and stop because of such man came in front of your car and he also told you to drive slow then , you’re experiencing  such aggression is Impulsive.

  • Instrumental  :   this type of aggression involves planning intent , typically to achieve a specific desire or goal.

For example : You appointed as a monitor of your class but suddenly a new student come and appoint as monitor of your class by changing you from monitor post, then you’re experiencing such behavior against teacher is instrumental.

Signs of Aggressive person


Aggressive behavior is intended to harm someone who doesn’t  want to be harmed . It must involve action, physical harm , verbal harm, and it can also involve coercion and manipulation , like :

  • Physical, like hitting, beating, slapping or any act that cause physical hurt.
  • Verbal, includes insults, shouting and other cruel remarks and hate speeches that intended to cause pain and distress.
  • Relational, which intended to harm another person’s relationship and reputation through spreading rumors about someone else.
  • Passive aggression,  includes expression of negative feeling like ignoring, offering back-handed compliments.

Preventions of Aggression


If you’re experiencing feeling of any anger issue , then make an anger management plan that should include ways to reduce your stress level, like :

  • Practicing relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing and others.
  • Being mindful of your anger warning signs like fast pulses, sweating, clenching your jaw.
  • Keep your mind cool even it anger situation outside.
  • Walk away and make distance from such people that engage you in anger situation.
  • Reaching out with family members and true friends who can support you in managing anger issues and medical condition.
  • Listening music is also helps in maintaining anger issues, and also improves mood  (emotional songs , not the action songs ).
  • Daily exercise to maintain physical health and control mental health.
  • Doesn’t involve in fighting and messing with others.
